Neiman Marcus Steps Up Its Efforts to Go Global

How do you cater to the wealthy around the world without opening physical stores?  You buy an existing successful online business.
The luxury retailer [Neiman Marcus], which only operates department stores and outlet stores in the United States, has announced a rare acquisition: a deal to buy the Munich-based Mytheresa.com online luxury business from founders Christoph and Susanne Botschen and Acton Capital Partners.
As part of the deal, Neiman Marcus is also buying Theresa’s flagship store in central Munich.

Look out Net-a-Porter and The Corner.  The competitive heat is on.

Digital SMEs, Let's Go Global with Unilever

Unilever's Go Global initiative started earlier this month and is open to digital marketing start-ups in the area of content, mobile or other connected devices.  The seven digital companies selected will be awarded $100,000 and their technology will be incorporated into a Unilever brand’s marketing campaign in the UK, US, South Africia, Indonesia, India, Brazil or Argentina.

The Unilever brands involved are: Magnum, Surf, Flora Pro-Activ, Hellmann’s, Vaseline and Clear.

I had the great honor of giving a presentation on "Go Global!" to Seton Hill University's E-Magnify's women business center on September 26th.  What a magnificent city Pittsburgh is.  I took this photo en route from the airport to the university.  I'll definitely be returning soon.  It's a gem of a place.

Ford's EcoSport Poised to Go Global

Ford is on a global role. After launching the EcoSport in India and Nepal, Ford India has now started exporting its SUV to South Africa. Next up? Ford will launch EcoSport in Europe, Middle-East, Sri Lanka and Vietnam by late 2013 or early 2014
Ultimately, Ford plans to take the EcoSport production global. Besides Chennai in India, Ford has shortlisted locations like Elabuga in Russia, Rayong in Thailand, Camacari in Brazil and Chongqing in China for its plants. It will be retailed in 62 countries by the year 2017.

To Go Global, Start Making Baby Formula

Major retailers in Germany this year began rationing sales of leading brands of baby formula. Parents in Britain, the Netherlands and Hong Kong have faced similar restrictions.  So much for globalization.

Part of the reason for the scarcity?
Parents thousands of miles away in China have been using the Internet or tapping friends and relatives in Europe to buy up stocks of high quality European-produced formula — often paying much higher prices than they would here.  Chinese demand for foreign brands soared after drought in Australia and New Zealand cut supplies from China’s major sources of imported baby formula.
